Is it more than normal, or just the heat?

Everyone in the Philippines sweats. Heat and humidity make sure of it. So the fair question is whether yours is more than your body actually needs. Be honest:

  • Do you sweat through your shirt in an air-conditioned office, just sitting?
  • Do you carry a spare top, or only buy dark colours?
  • Do you keep your arms down in photos and meetings?
  • Have stronger deodorants barely made a difference?

If you said yes to a few, you're not alone, and it has nothing to do with how clean you are. Sweating beyond what your body needs to cool down has a medical name: hyperhidrosis. A doctor can assess it and treat it.

Only a doctor can tell you if it's hyperhidrosis. But your answers are a great way to describe your daily life when you sit down for that talk.

Where does the name come from?

"Sweatox" is a nickname: sweat + Botox. Clinics around the Philippines use it for the same thing: botulinum toxin injected into the skin to reduce heavy sweating.

Underarms are what most people ask about, so that's the focus here. At One Nadela, palms and the soles of the feet can be treated too. It's an injection treatment done in the clinic. No cutting, no stitches.

How can an injection stop sweat?

Your sweat glands don't switch on by themselves. A nerve sends them a chemical message that says "sweat now." Botulinum toxin blocks that message where it's injected.

So your glands are still there and still healthy. They just stop getting the memo. Over the next few months the nerve endings recover, the message gets through again, and the sweating slowly comes back.

That's why sweatox is a repeat treatment. It works for a stretch of months, then you decide whether to go again.

What happens at your appointment?

Plan for about an hour and a half. Most of it is numbing and mapping.

  1. 1A short talk with the doctor. You describe your sweating and your health. Mention it if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.
  2. 2Numbing cream. It goes on your underarms for 30 minutes to an hour, so the skin is numb before any needle touches it.
  3. 3Mapping. The doctor draws a neat grid of dots over the sweaty area, a bit like connect-the-dots. Even spacing is the goal, so the toxin covers the whole area that sweats.
  4. 4The injections. One small injection on each dot, on both sides.
  5. 5Home the same day.

How soon will you feel drier?

Not on the day itself. Here's the usual timeline:

  • Week 1Sweating may start to ease as early as one week after.
  • Weeks 2 to 3The full effect usually shows by now.
  • Months 4 to 6The effect usually lasts about four to six months, then slowly fades.

It's different for everyone. Dr. Aquino ties it to two things: your metabolism, and how active you are. So two friends treated on the same day may need their next session at different times.

Quick tip

Want to stay dry for a wedding, a trip or a big presentation? Book at least three weeks before.

What side effects can you expect?

Most are small and stay right where the needle went in:

  • Redness at the injection spots
  • Swelling or small bumps called blebs: the little lump that forms when liquid goes just under the skin
  • Bruising in some people

These settle over time. If anything worries you after your visit, call the clinic and talk to the doctor who treated you.

Who shouldn't have it?

Sweatox is generally not given during pregnancy or breastfeeding. If either applies, it's worth waiting, and the doctor will ask about both. If neither applies, the doctor uses your consultation to check that the treatment suits you, and says so plainly if something else needs looking at first.

How much does it cost?

At One Nadela, underarm sweatox starts at ₱25,000, and that covers both underarms. Palms and soles are quoted separately.

Before you book anywhere, ask

  • Can this help my sweating? The doctor should look at the area, not just quote a price.
  • Does the price cover both underarms? At One Nadela it does.
  • Who does the injecting? Get their name and PRC licence.
  • How is the area mapped? Even spacing is what lets the toxin reach everywhere.
  • When do I come back? Usually at four to six months, once the sweat returns.

Sounds like your daily life?
